Before you hire a magician in Edmonton, settle three things: whether you want close-up magic among your guests, a stage show, or both; how many hours you need; and what the room needs. Then ask the magician a few questions, so there are no surprises on the night.
Close-up, a stage show, or both
A magician can stroll between groups doing close-up magic, put on a stage show, or both.
Close-up magic works well while people are having drinks and talking, because guests don’t have to stop and sit down. The magician moves from group to group, and each group gets its own few minutes.
A stage show works when everyone is seated and you want one shared moment, such as after dinner at an office party. Everyone watches together, so you need a spot that the whole room can see.
Some magicians also do mind-reading acts, often called mentalism, or mix magic with comedy. If you have a style in mind, put it in your request. If you don’t, ask each magician for a short video, so you can see how they work with a crowd.
How many hours
For close-up magic, think about your guest count. The more guests you have, the longer the magician needs to reach every group. For a stage show, ask how long the show runs, and plan when it fits around dinner and speeches.
Seven questions to ask before you book
- Will you do close-up magic, a stage show, or both, and for how long?
- How many guests can you reach in the time I’m booking?
- What do you need from the room: a stage area, a microphone, a table or extra light?
- Is your material right for a work crowd, and for any children who’ll be there?
- When will you arrive, and how much time do you need to set up?
- Can you work around dinner service and speeches?
- What happens if you can’t make it on the day?
Questions about experience and fit
- How long have you been performing, and have you done events like mine?
- Can you send a short video of a recent show?
- Where can I read reviews from past clients?
- How do you handle guests who are shy or don’t want to take part?
- Can you work our company name or theme into the act?
Questions about the details
- What will you wear?
- If our venue asks for proof of insurance, can you send it?
- What happens if our timing or plans change?
- What’s included: the hours, travel and anything extra?
What the venue needs
For close-up magic, guests need enough light to see the magician’s hands, and the magician needs room to move between tables or groups. For a stage show, check that everyone can see from their seats, and ask the venue whether there’s a microphone for a large room.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking a stage show for a crowd that will be standing and talking. Close-up magic suits that room better.
- Booking too little time for close-up magic with a big guest list, so some groups never see it.
- Forgetting to mention children in the audience, or guests who don’t speak English as a first language. Both can change what the magician performs.
What changes the price
The price depends on how many hours you book, whether it’s a Saturday or in the holiday season, a bigger show or a second performer, and travel outside Edmonton.

How we put this together
We wrote this from what people tell us when they ask for a magician in Edmonton: the type of event, how long they need, and whether they want close-up magic or a show. It doesn’t list prices, because they depend on your date, your hours and the kind of magic you want. For typical prices, read how much a magician costs in Edmonton.
