For a corporate party in Ottawa that runs five or six hours, the music works best when you plan it in parts. A band usually plays in sets with breaks, and you may not need a full band for every hour. Tell us your date, venue, guest count and the hours, and you can compare options with prices for bands who are free that day.
Plan the night in parts
Think about what each part of the evening needs:
- arrival and dinner, when people want to talk;
- speeches or awards, when the music stops;
- dancing, later in the night.
Tell us which parts need live music. That may be fewer hours than the whole party.
Sets and breaks
A band plays in sets, usually with breaks. Over five or six hours, those breaks add up. Ask each band how long they play in one stretch, how long the breaks are, and what plays during them: a playlist, or nothing. Ask for the set times and the breaks to be written into the booking.
Choices that change the price
The price depends on how many hours they play and how many musicians come. Some choices to talk through:
- a smaller band, or an acoustic duo or trio, for the quieter part of the night;
- live music for the dancing only, with a playlist through dinner;
- the same band starting as a smaller acoustic group and adding players later, if they offer it;
- the venue’s sound system, if the band can use it.
Put what matters most in your request, and we’ll ask each band about it.
Music for a work crowd
Tell us the styles you’d like, such as covers, pop or acoustic, and send a few songs your team likes and anything to leave out.
Check with your venue
- how much space the band can have, and where the nearest power is;
- whether the venue has a sound system the band can use;
- whether there’s a sound limit, or a time the music has to stop;
- when the band can load in and sound check.
Ask the band, too, whether they expect a meal during a long evening, so you can plan it with your caterer.
Questions to ask before you book
- How long do you play in one stretch, and how long are the breaks?
- What plays during your breaks?
- Can you play a quieter acoustic set early, and a dance set later?
- How many musicians would you bring for our hours?
- Do you bring your own sound, or can you use the venue’s?
- Will you need a meal during the evening?
- When will you arrive, and how long do you need to set up?
What changes the price
The price depends on how many hours they play, whether it’s a Saturday or in the holiday season, a bigger band, sound and lighting if the venue has none, and travel outside Ottawa.

How we put this together
We wrote this from what people tell us when they ask for a band in Ottawa: the type of event, the style of music, how long and how many guests. It doesn’t list prices, because they depend on your date, your hours and the band you choose. You’ll see prices with the options we send.
